Classroom Updates

Pre-School

Mrs. Magby

Our Pre-K students are well on their way to being great readers.. They have such a fantastic love for books!  We have learned the name, sound and sign language for half of the letters in the alphabet.  The children get a kick out of singing and signing the alphabet song.  We are also working on blends for the letters that we have learned thus far.

We’ve enjoyed several field trips this year.  Our first trips was to the Stayton library.  Karen, the librarian, is always delightful.  Next, we picked out a pumpkin from the EZ Orchard pumpkin patch and made our way through their corn maze.  Our last trip was to the Elsinore Theatre for a performance of “Seussical”.  It was great to hear the little voices around us as they joined the lines from several “Cat in the Hat’ favorites.

“God Takes Care of Us” is the reoccurring theme in our Bible lessons, along with, “In the beginning God Created…”

God made a beautiful place for us and gave us the breath of life.  Time and time again throughout the Old Testament we see how God provides for His people.  We are moving into the New Testament now as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas – Jesus.  God gave us a gift to “take care” of our salvation.  God is more than able to supply our needs.

What a joy to belong to Him!

Kindergarten

Mrs. Dessieux

Our kindergarten class is off to a super start.  We’ve been learning about how God has a plan for each of our lives just as he did for the Bible characters we have been learning about.

The kids have learned almost all their letters and sounds so we’re diving into reading groups this week which should be lots of fun.  In addition to working on handwriting, the students are trying their hand at creative writing, coming up with their own sentences and using their phonics skills to spell the words they need.

We just finished up a unit on patterns and these kids grasped the idea and took off with it, creating all kinds of patterns of their own.

We also went on a fun field trip to see Seussical at the Elsinore Theater after spending several weeks reading Dr. Seuss books.

Second Grade

Miss Newtson

The second graders are having an exciting year.

We are walking our way through the Bible.  We have learned about many people in the Old Testament that have shown us ways that God wants us to live.

We have investigated pumpkins and used the scientific method to solve a discovery question that we had about our pumpkins.

Many of the students are great readers.  Incorporating with their love for reading with creating great stories is something that we are working towards.

The new technology projectors that we now have in our classrooms have been a wonderful tool.  For instance, students were able to see an interactive game about simple machines taken directly from the Internet.

I am looking forward to upcoming units of students.  We will be learning about the process of a factory and visiting the Don Pancho Tortilla Factory to see how it all works.  Also, we will be studying about animals and taking a trip to the zoo.

Third Grade

Miss Lay

We had an exciting learning opportunity this fall with our over night Geology fieldtrip.

Oregon is rich with opportunities to learn about Geology and the ways in which our Lord uses natural processes in His creation.  We traveled to Bend to tour the High Desert Museum.  It has some awesome wildlife, exploration and settlement, and living history exhibits.  We also visited the Dee Wright Observatory.  This stone structure was built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp and points out 21 different geologic formations.

Third grade is full of growth and discovery!

Fourth Grade

Miss Bigelow

The Fourth grade students’ love for our Lord and Savior is obvious, and their positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning make the Forth grade classroom an exciting place to be!

In October, we were able to enrich our Geology Unit by taking an overnight fieldtrip with the 3rd grade class to Central Oregon. We visited the Lava Cast Forest and the Big Obsidian Flow in Newberry National Volcanic Monument, as well as exploring The High Desert Museum. One of the highlights of our trip was obvious by the time we reached Santiam Pass: as one of the Fourth graders put it, “Cool, I’m the first person to see snow this winter!”

Another highlight of our year so far was our involvement with Operation Christmas Child and Samaritan’s Purse. Again, the 3rd and 4th grade students joined forces, and their selfless giving enabled us to put together four Christmas Child shoeboxes, as well as donate money for Child Feeding Programs, Blankets & Bedding, Balls & Recreational Items, and The Greatest Gift of All Literature through International Relief with Samaritan’s Purse. We even took a quick “fieldtrip” to a local store to purchase items for the shoeboxes. They also really enjoyed writing and decorating letters to send with the shoeboxes.

Middle School

Miss Martin/Mrs. Dessieux

Stayton Christian School is preparing for their Christmas Program.  The students have been working hard on rhythm, singing the notes, songs, chimes and solos for the concert.  They've been pretty good at staying on task, but sometimes they start talking and don't listen to their music teacher Mr. Custer.  They work after school on hand bell chimes.  There are 12 students that come to after school practices.  They have been practicing for 1 week.  -Stacy Rossiter

Luke has been enjoying dodge ball.  He only got hit one time, but he got out twice because someone caught the ball.  It was fun.  -Luke Hilgers

The students are beginning to work on historical fiction.  They are doing research to be sure of their details and are writing character sketches and other background information about their settings.  The fifth and sixth  graders are almost finished with a unit on India. 8th grade is studying the Revolutionary War in some detail - memorizing famous quotes and paying particular attention to the causes of the war, as well as studying the precedents set by the early colonists for the foundation of our great country. The 8th grade is studying through the Old Testament and will read it entirely this year.  The 5/6 is studying the New Testament, particularly the book of Acts at this time, and all have learned a great deal that the Bible teaches about churches and missions.
